The Dey Mansion will be hosting A Dutch Christmas event to celebrate and kick-off the holiday season. For most children in the Netherlands, the most important day during December is the 6th, when Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) brings them their presents! Sinterklaas is said to have traveled by ship to Amsterdam's harbor every winter where he was greeted by all the people. Bells ring out, the people cheer, and a brass band leads a parade through the streets. At the end of the evening, the children set their shoes by the fireplace, filled with hay and carrots for Sinterklaas’s horse. This Dutch tradition would have been celebrated at the Dey Mansion, home to Colonel Theunis Dey, one of the nation’s early Dutch families. Come celebrate with us as we await the arrival of Sinterklaas, who will be making a special appearance, along with men at arms from New Jersey’s local militia. The mansion will be fully decorated for the event.
