Hackettstown State Fish Hatchery Broodstock Collection Notes
April 26, 2006 (rt23 news) - The 2006 muskellunge broodstock collection season began when the Hackettstown Hatchery trap-netting crew set three Pennsylvania-style trap nets in Greenwood Lake on April 10th. In seven days of trap-netting, which concluded on April 17th, twenty-two adult muskellunge were collected. The catch was split between 12 males and 10 females. The muskies were transported to the Hackettstown Hatchery where eggs were taken from seven of the ten females. All muskies will be returned to Greenwood within the next three weeks.
Other fish captured in Greenwood Lake trap nets included 1818 white perch, 684 sunfish, 679 yellow perch, 377 black crappie, 113 brown bullheads, 77 walleyes, 29 landlocked alewife, 14 chain pickerel, 1 largemouth bass, and 1 smallmouth bass. The water temperature in Greenwood Lake at the time of collection was 46-52 degrees.
Greenwood Lake again produced some big fish. Three of the muskies weighed over 20 pounds. The largest was a 50-inch, 33-pound female. Six of the walleyes captured weighed eight pounds or more. The largest walleye weighed in at 9.5 pounds and measured 28.8 inches in length.
