2002-03 Winter Trout-Stocked Lakes Stocking Schedule
NOTE: The January 3, 2003 stocking has been postponed due to weather conditions. It is tentatively rescheduled for Monday, January 6, weather permitting.
In fall 2000 the Division of Fish and Wildlife added variety and increased angling opportunities during late fall and winter by initiating the Winter Trout-Stocked Lakes Program. During winter, anglers fishing through the ice may benefit the most, but they are by no means the only ones who will benefit - the likely presence of ice on any water and the allowance of ice fishing were not criteria in determining which lakes would be stocked. This year, 24 lakes geographically distributed throughout New Jersey will be stocked with 12,940 rainbow trout raised at the Pequest Trout Hatchery averaging 11 inches in length.
In recent years, safe ice formation has been sporadic, especially in south Jersey, so open water winter fishing has been the norm. These winter stocked trout will readily strike in open water at low temperatures, so anyone fishing from shore or boat should see their fishing action increase. There are two changes in the program this year. Due to the current dredging and shoreline restoration project at Verona Park Lake, winter trout stocking for January 2 has been cancelled. In South Jersey, Haddon Lake (Camden Co.) has been substituted for Laurel Pond (Burlington Co.), because anglers did not have fishing access to Laurel Pond last winter.
