Experience holiday life during the Civil War both on the home front and at a soldiers’ winter encampment on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, September, December 8 at Historic Speedwell in Morristown. At the encampment, visit and speak with the soldiers as they prepare for a holiday away from home. Explore the authentically reproduced huts, and watch as the soldiers make a holiday meal over the camp fire. On the home front at the historic Vail House, listen to the family read actual letters from the Union troops to their loved ones. Take a tour through the Vail House to see how a home was prepared for the holidays with simple, yet elegant decorations. You are invited to attend a Civil War era Officer’s Ball recreated in the 1849 Carriage House with fiddle music, ribbons, and pine. Officers are dressed in their best uniforms and ready to dance. Taste some hot mulled cider and cookies by the outdoor fire. Events take place from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
