Sonny Rollins in Concert. It’s one of the most indelible impressions in all of jazz: the lone sax player poised under a bridge, playing for himself and for the music, silhouetted against a backdrop of the big city looming across the water. That picture is Sonny Rollins. For over half a century, this jazz superstar has handled the tenor sax with the majesty of a Greek god. Rollins’ early work with Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk established his career, but his recordings as a leader from the 1950s on made him a titan of the tenor sax, on par with John Coltrane and Lester Young. One of the few remaining icons of the golden era of jazz – and still one of the music’s most formidable improvisers — Rollins’ live performances are always fueled by spontaneous creativity.
