Explore Winter’s Wonders With the Pequannock River Coalition on January 19th



How do trees avoid freezing in sub-zero weather? What local bird served as the model for Woody Woodpecker? How do bears, deer, squirrels and river otters communicate without ever seeing each other? The answers to these and many other fascinating questions will be revealed on the Pequannock River Coalition Winter Hike.



Please join us as we visit beaver ponds and heron rookeries, examine the remains of vanished glaciers and enjoy the aroma of a thousand pines. This hike is a moderate one of about 3 miles, taken at an easy pace over mostly level terrain. It is meant to be long on education and short on aerobics, with frequent stops to examine sites of interest and discuss natural features.



The hike starts at 10AM and concludes at 2 PM. Please arrive by 9:45 to ensure a prompt start.



Participants will meet at the gravel parking lot on Green Pond Rd, 1/4 mile west of southbound Rt. 23 in Rockaway.



From Rt. 23 north, u-turn at LaRue Rd (9 miles north of Rt. 287) to reach Green Pond Rd.



Bring lunch and a drink, wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes and dress for the weather. The forecast is for clear but cold weather with a high about 30. That will only make the hot chocolate tase better.



There is no fee for this event. It is open to the general public, including children over 10 years of age. Sorry, no pets!
