PRC Winter Hike

Long Pond Ironworks

Hewitt, New Jersey
Each year, despite cold weather, our winter hike has a super turn-out. Cabin fever has set in for most of us
by then, and the lure of a walk in the winter woods is just too good to pass up. In addition, we are often lucky enough to
have snow on the ground, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of our local wildlife. Not a mouse or sparrow,
bobcat or coyote, fails to show us what they have been up to, with their stories written in white powder.
The chance for snow this year is not good, but the weather is fine – a high near 40 with partly cloudy skies. Let’s go!
We have chosen a hike in the Wanaque River Watershed around the Long Pond Ironworks. This helps to
confirm our new commitment to act as watchdogs for this area, and is a fascinating location for wildlife, scenery, and history.
Hikers will meet at the parking lot just west of Monksville Reservoir on Greenwood Lake Turnpike in front of the restored buildings.
The 4-mile hike begins at 10AM and will end around 2PM. We ask that you arrive no later than 9:45 to assure a prompt start.
Please bring lunch and a beverage, since a lunch stop is in the schedule for noon (see photo below). Cameras and binoculars are
welcome equipment. And dress for the weather! Our hikes are rain-or-shine events, within reason. If in doubt, call our office for a last minute update.
There is a $5 fee for non-members. Students (under 21) are exempt.
