I found some more info too. Angus Snead MacDonald was apparently the head of the company at the time of the library contracts. He wrote a monograph on library design that is still being refernced today. He seems to have either invented or completely redefined the concept of modular shelving. If you do a search on him you'll find references and in fact I think you can still buy copies of his paper.
