April 16, 2024 (rt23 news) - The Route 23, Northbound Bridge over Pequannock River Project is located between mileposts 25.13 to 25.70 on the border of West Milford township in Passaic County and Jefferson Township in Morris County. The bridge is rated in overall “Poor” condition and is classified as“Structurally Deficient” due to the condition of the deck and substructure. The purpose of this project is to replace the bridge with a cost-effective and low maintenance structure. Additional improvements include improving the substandard horizontal and vertical stopping sight distances, updating guiderails and roadway superelevation to meet current design standards, placing the proposed structure entirely within NJDOT’s right-of-way, and providing wildlife passages below the bridge.

CONSTRUCTION STAGING
Bridge construction will be completed in three primary stages utilizing a single lane closure in Stages 1 and 3.
Stage 1 includes closing the right lane of traffic and maintaining the left lane on the western half of the existing bridge. The eastern half of the existing bridge will be demolished and replaced.

Stage 2 is a “no-work” stage due to environmental permit restrictions for in-water work. The right lane of traffic will be opened on the newly constructed eastern half of the bridge, while the left traffic lane remains open on the remaining portion of the existing bridge.

Stage 3 includes closing the left lane of traffic on the existing bridge and maintaining the right lane on the new bridge. The remainder of the existing bridge will be demolished, and the new structure completed.
