Wallisch Homestead
65 Lincoln Ave.
West Milford, New Jersey
We are putting on our 2nd annual Halloween Scarecrow Making Contest and Ghost Story Festival. Participants may bring a finished scarecrow, or may arrive prepared to make a scarecrow
with the help of our trusty volunteers . We provide you with all of the materials : hay, old clothes, lumber, and arts and crafts materials. (Please feel free to bring in your own clothes to create your own or to donate for others)
All ages are welcome. Local folk artists are encouraged to out -do each other with their entries to inspire us all!
The scarecrows will be displayed in a huge circle on the lawn, as was done last year, and will be on display until Thanksgiving week. Hot 0N6A1733dogs, cider, and donuts will be available for sale,
and a $10 donation is requested per scarecrow to offset the costs of the materials.
The scarecrow making will be from 11:00 am -4:00 pm.
The ghost stories will be later in the evening after dark., from 7:00 pm- 9:00 pm.
We had about 100 people visit last year and we ended up with 27 scarecrows in a huge circle which provided a really eerie sight. We saved most of them,
and we hope we will have more than 50 this year. Who knows, maybe this could become a real tourist attraction for our town!
The ghost story part of the event was fun last year, and this year we intend to make it even better. We’re going to invite everyone to come back after dinner
to hear and tell ghost stories after dark around the campfire.
We also will have some Halloween themed live music, by Deputy Dawg and The Strays. Hot chocolate, and cider donuts will be available as well. Come on out for a great social evening out with your families and friends!
0N6A1762The Friends of Wallisch Homestead asks that all scarecrows that are made for the event be suitable for children to view, and that good judgment be the rule.
We also request that all participants be aware that the folk art scarecrow display is meant for Halloween fun, and not be used as a forum to advance personal or political agendas.
Prizes will be awarded for Funniest, Most Unusual, Most Classic, and Scariest scarecrows!
For the evening portion of the event, it is requested that everyone bring their own camp chairs, bug repellent, and flashlights.
All who wish to tell a ghost story should contact Jeff Weinman at 973-506-7661.
THE HALLOWEEN FUN CONTINUES AFTER DARK: COME OUT FOR GHOST STORIES AND MUSIC !
Join us after dark in the center of our ring of scarecrows. where we will gather around a brightly burning campfire. We’ll hear legends, and tales of the uncanny from local folklore enthusiasts. We will hear personal accounts of sightings of spirits and phantoms associated with the history of the farm. Who knows if they are true or just tall tales….?
Perhaps the most interesting and oldest known of the legends is the “Mole Men of the Bearfort Mountain Mine”. This frightening tale was first told in the 1850s -just a few years after the terrible collapse of the central tunnel of the Bearfort Iron Mine. We are very excited to report that Friends of Wallisch have uncovered new evidence (found in a sink hole under a what may be an old foundation) at a remote corner of the property) that seems to confirm these stories. The legend of the Mole Men may really be true! If you want to know THE DETAILS of what we found, better come to the campfire to see the evidence for yourself!
Fresh cider donuts, hot chocolate, and Ochs Farm cider will be available. Live Halloween inspired acoustic blues will be played by Deputy Dawg0N6A1732 and the Strays until late.
Please contact Jeff Weinman at 201-951-1063 if you have a ghost story or personal experience you wish to relate, especially regarding the ghostly residents of the Wallisch Farm, or the Mole Men of Bearfort Mountain Mine.
