Living History in Northern New Jersey
NJHHS Table: The Charcoal Industry of New Jersey
Ringwood, New Jersey
12:30 PM – 4:30 PM on Sunday, August 28, 2022
Ringwood Manor
1304 Sloatsburg Road
Ringwood, New Jersey
The North Jersey Highlands Historical Society's August history table is dedicated to historic charcoal industry that once thrived throughout New Jersey. Charcoal fueled the local iron industry. Blast furnaces and forges could not operate without the use of charcoal. Did you know more people were employed to provide charcoal than worked in the mines, forges, or the furnaces? Iron mining companies often had difficulty in recruiting the skilled master "colliers" that were needed. Members of the NJHHS will have artifacts, photographs, and other information on display, as well as be available to discuss the industry and answer your questions. This outdoor event will take place on the grounds surrounding Ringwood Manor. Please note that rain would cancel the program.
