Come join our NJ Search and Rescue volunteer John Rovetto for our annual High Point "First Day Challenge" hike. This will be a great way to start off the new year and get in some exercise and fresh air. The hike is 5.8 miles. The first, more rugged half of the hike will be in the Appalachian Trail in scenic High Point State Park. The return will be on the easier Iris Trail, a well graded old wagon road. There will be numerous scenic views along the AT along the ridgeline. Maximum elevation =1600 ft Minimum elevation =1300 ft. Members of NJ Search and Rescue will be along to assist. This is a difficult to strenuous hike and open to anyone all ages 12 and up. Parents can use discretion if choosing to bring younger children. Dogs are permitted but must be on a maximum 6' leash and under owner's control at all times. Wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, depending on conditions snowshoes or foot traction may be appropriate. Bring snacks, water, bagged lunch, binoculars and camera. The pace will not be too rapid, please be realistic when assessing any medical conditions that may preclude such activities. Meeting location: Appalachian Trail parking lot Route 23, Montague, NJ (just south of High Point State Park Office, 1480 Route 23). There is no fee charged to participate in this hike. New Jersey Search and Rescue is a non-profit organization that does not charge for its services. However, donations, no matter how small are always welcome. www.njsar.org Registration is required.
