Challenge Hike - Cascades to Claudius
Ringwood, New Jersey
9:30 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2003

NJAS' Weis Ecology Center
150 Snake Den Road
Ringwood, New Jersey

Don Weise from New Jersey Audubon Society’s Weis Ecology Center leads a group called the Weis Wyanokie Wanderers on strenuous monthly hikes that visit some of the Highlands’ most beautiful areas. These hikes are for athletic people in good cardiovascular shape as the terrain is steep and the pace is fast. Don’s February hike features a visit to the outlaw Claudius Smith’s den deep in the heart of Harriman State Park. This very strenuous, 7-9 mile hike begins at Lake Sebago, travels to Diamond Mountain to Smith’s den and then descends Almost Perpendicular. Winter destinations are weather and safety dependent. Participants must dress appropriately (wind/water/snow proof layers as necessary) and pack lunch and water. This hike meets at 9:30 am at the Weis Ecology Center on Sunday, February 23, 2003.

The cost of the hike is $8 per person, with a $3 discount for members of the New Jersey Audubon Society. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. To register mail your name, address, phone number, the number of participants and payment to: NJAS’ Weis Ecology Center, 150 Snake Den Road, Ringwood, NJ 07456. For more information, or to register with a credit card, contact the Weis Ecology Center office at (973) 835-2160 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Visit them online at www.njaudubon.org.

The Weis Ecology Center is one of nine staffed centers operated by the New Jersey Audubon Society, a private, not-for-profit, member supported organization. The Center’s goal is to enhance people’s awareness of, and appreciation for, their environment. Specializing in full-day and residential environmental education programs for school, scout and other youth and adult groups, Weis is also recognized for its popular public programs for adults, kids and families. The Weis Visitors Center, open during business hours, houses their turtle, snakes, seasonal exhibits and an NJAS Nature Store featuring field guides, bird feeders and accessories, kid stuff, regional trail maps and more.
