The Summer Institute for the Gifted proudly presents its third Connecticut Educators Conference in Gifted Education:
“A New Look at Gifted Education”
Keynote Presenter: James Borland, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Education and
Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching
Teachers College, Columbia University
Keynote Address: “Rethinking Gifted Education”
In his Keynote, Dr. Borland will examine, address, critique, and suggest alternatives to some of the assumptions and methods that have been the bedrock of the gifted education field since it re-appeared on the educational scene in the early 1970s. Gifted education is in a period of re-examination and transition unlike any experienced in recent memory. Faced with criticism from advocates of school reform and increasing skepticism over the efficacy of gifted programs on the part of educators in the schools, scholars and practitioners in the filed of gifted education have had to rethink many of the beliefs and practices on which the field is based.
Dr. Borland will also lead a breakout session entitled:
“Identifying and Educating Economically Disadvantaged Students”
Additional breakout sessions will be offered in topics related to the conference theme.
Target Audience: Program Coordinators, Administrators, Teachers of the Gifted, Classroom Teachers, Guidance Counselors, other Educators, Parents of Gifted Children
