The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. William Berz, will present “Music From the People”, a concert of music inspired by folk songs and dances. The concert will be highlighted by cornet virtuoso, Dr. Bryan Appleby-Wineberg, performing Arban’s legendary Carnival of Venice. From Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ Folk Song Suite to Sousa’s Rose, Shamrock and Thistle March, the program showcases music for wind ensemble drawn from the treasured musical traditions of folk music. Other featured pieces include Culloden III, a symphonic work by Emmy-award winning composer, Julie Giroux, that draws on the music of 1740’s Scotland to depict the historic battle of Culloden, Shostakovich’s Folk Dances, a festive and spirited work that portrays the joy and exuberance of the Russian people, New Wade’n Water, a contemporary adaptation of a traditional spirtual by Adolphus Hailstork, and popular favorites including marches and a medley from Fiddler on the Roof.
