Public Meeting in Northern New Jersey
West Milford SPRINT PCS Cell Tower Council Vote
West Milford, New Jersey
7:30 PM on Wednesday, April 18, 2001
West Milford Town Hall
1480 Union Valley Road
West Milford, New Jersey
For those not familiar with the area, it is one of the most scenic vistas along that stretch of highway 23.
Known as the Macopin Gorge, the rest area sits at the base of Kanouse Mountain to the North, and overlooks the Charlottesburg Reservoir.
Those of us that travel that road every day are familiar with the incredible scenery there. The cliffs above the rest area are a prime raptor area, and many people park their cars at the rest area to hike up the mountain to take in the views. If you park at the rest area and look up you may be lucky enough to see a bald eagle, red shouldered hawk, great blue heron or a number of circling turkey vultures.
Sprint unfortunately sees it from another angle, a money making venture. Even Verizon Wireless already services the area, Sprint feels the need is there to supply their wireless customers with service over what they call a 1 mile dead-zone.
At the public hearing in February SPRINT representatives, told residents that there would be absolutely no environmental impact, and they have since refused to co-locate their antenna onto an existing tower at the Echo Lake Stables on Echo Lake Road, less than a mile away.If the Town Council officially opposes the tower the DOT would not grant SPRINT approval. We the people need to convince the Council to pass this resolution opposing the tower. So please attend and donβt be afraid to make your voice heard.
