PRC needs a hand completing our planting project on April 10th. That means you!
In 2010 we began the daunting task of removing Japanese knotweed from the grounds of Appelt Park in
Riverdale. An invader from Asia, this plant grows to heights of 12 feet, forming dense stands along rivers and streams, and offers no
benefit to wildlife. It has been forcing out native vegetation and gobbling up the Pequannock riverbank. Time for it to go! Last summer,
three work sessions involving thousands of volunteer hours were required to remove it. A job well done!
This year, it’s time to restore native vegetation there. Getting plants like spicebush, elderberry, and
serviceberry re-established will be of benefit to local wildlife and will help prevent the knotweed from returning.
Our first work session on March 26th was a huge success. More than 100 shrubs were planted. A great start! We urge you to assist us in finishing the job.
Please join us on 04/10 from 10 AM to 1PM as we complete this task. We need you!
We will be working to get the second set of plants in the ground. This is fairly light labor, and all tools will be provided,
although extra shovels and gloves are welcome. It’s a rain-or-shine event to some degree, meaning a light shower won’t
cancel it, but a heavy downpour will. With winter finally over we are hoping for good weather.
Appelt Park is on the east side of Hamburg Turnpike in Riverdale, about 1/2 mile north of Rt. 287. For more information,
