Captain Phil Kozak Memorial Children’s Fishing Derby.
The event, from 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, is open to youngsters ages 5 to 16. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
The anglers will cast their lines along the Wanaque River in the Hershfield Park area, which will be stocked with bass, trout, catfish, sunfish and crappie provided by the Musky Trout Hatchery in Asbury.
Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish and most fish caught.
"It teaches the children patience, to identify different species of fish, and good environmental habits for the waterways," said Edward Meakem, who was inspired by memories of fishing as a child at New Jersey lakes to start the tournament six years ago.
"It was a wonderful way for a family to bond," he said. "We in Pompton Lakes have three rivers and two lakes and I was looking for a way to help residents and their children to enjoy our amenities."
Phil Kozak, who was an avid angler and president of the National Fishing Association, joined Meakem in organizing the first derby in 2004. Kozak died in March 2008 and the derby was renamed in his honor.
The derby continues each year hosted by the Kozak family, Meakem and a group of volunteers and runs completely on donations. This year’s organizers include the Passiac River Coalition Pompton Lakes Residents for Environmental Integrity and the Pompton Lakes Democratic Club.
