Arthurs has a tastefully decorated dining room with large windows looking out on downtown Lake Mohawk and a small park.  We decide on the Delmonico Steak with a cold lobster salad for an appetizer.  Our other entree was a Stuffed Chicken wrapped in Applewood Bacon.  Both entrees were reasonaably priced and excellent as was the service.  Arthurs in Sparta is worth the trip! We will be returning tosample the rest of the menu.

Luncheon at the Highlawn Pavillion

The Highlawn Pavilion offers a unique French influenced American cuisine in a beautiful park setting. The dining room offers extraordinary views of the New York skyline. These elements combine to create the perfect dining experience. The Ala Carte lunch ranged from salads and New England style Lobster Rolls to Filet Mignon and seafood entrees. The tiny pastry-like crab cakes served with jumbo shrimp and an arugala salad was delicious as was the roasted chicken with truffle sauce. The chocolate cake for desert was the perfect compliment to a gourmet luncheon. The Highlawn Pavilion has rating of "Excellent" by the New York Times and is winner of the DiRoNA Award placing it in the top 1% of restaurants in North America. We found the service, food and location as among the finest we have seen. The Highlawn Pavilion is located inside Eagle Rock Reservation, West Orange, NJ. Ala Carte lunch and dinners are served, reservations recommended, no jeans, jacket required after 5 pm.



HISTORY

The Casino in Eagle Rock Reservation was built in 1910 as an overlook and open air refreshment building. During World War One, Thomas Edison used the building and surrounding grounds for secret war time experiments for the United States government. By the 1950's, the Italian-style casino fell into disrepair. In 1988, the nearly condemned buidling underwent a massive restoration effort and rebirth as the Highlawn Pavilion.

Monicas House Special, Osso Buco served over fresh fettuccini

Monicas Restaurant in downtown Pompton Lakes offers fine Italian/Continental Cuisine in a cozy dining room or a small outdoor seating area. The house special of Osso Buco was excellent. A tender shank of veal is braised with aromatic vegatables and sesonings and is served over fresh fettuccini pasta. A glass of Cabernet from Monicas bar adds the final touch to this delicious dinner. The wait staff was very attentive creating a fine dining experience. The table setting was also impressive with fine china and crispy fresh rolls as well as a plate of olive oil, seasoned slices of toasted bread and olives. Monicas is open for lunch and dinner as well as private parties and take out orders.
